Paul’s Pals Pledges $50,000 to Becker Park in Crystal, MN
May 15, 2019
Paul’s Pals pledges $50,000 to the City of Crystal for their inclusive playground at Becker Park. The total project cost is $627,000 and will be completed in 2020.
About the project:
Currently, there are no options for accessible play available to families who live in the City of Crystal living with children with disabilities.
The re-imagined Becker Park is a fully-accessible play space for families and Crystal and the surrounding areas that:
- Encourages community gatherings regardless of ability
- Promotes healthy living through outdoor play
- Is compatible with public transportation and trail options
- Supports the local economy in Crystal’s central business district
It is estimated that 10,000 families will visit the park annually. This number is believed to increase with the eventual addition of planned programming and events to the park that currently do not exist.
Over 50% of households that are within a ten minute walk of Becker Park have an income of less than $35,000 per year. Access to programs and play spaces that are accessible is more difficult for families in low socioeconomic areas such as this.
Creating an inclusive space where families with children with disabilities can play not only benefits these households, it also positively impacts the local community based on the central location of the park.
